Abraham is an important figure in the bible, originally known as ‘Abram’. Abram’s name was changed to Abraham (meaning father of many nations). Till this day, Abraham is regarded as, ‘the father of faith’ because he had faith in God and obeyed Him, even when it was not convenient for him.
Abraham’s father, Terah, was from the family of Shem, one of the sons of Noah. Terah had two other sons–Nahor and Haran, the father of Lot. Although Abraham married Sarah, she was barren and could not have children. Terah and his family later left for Canaan, but stopped in Harran and settled there, where Terah eventually died.
God told Abraham to leave his country and his family house for a land He would show him; God promised to bless him and make him father of many nations. Abraham obeyed and trusted God. He took his wife, his nephew (Lot) and all their belongings, and set for Canaan.
They passed through Egypt, and settled in a place between Bethel and Ai, where Abraham built an altar and prayed to God. He had plenty of cattle. Eventually, Abraham’s and Lot’s herdsmen started fighting. For peace to reign, Abraham suggested they separate. Lot chose the side of Jordan that had healthy grass and water, while Abraham chose Canaan.
When she could not bear children, Sarah gave her maid Hagar to Abraham as a wife. Hagar became pregnant and gave birth to Ishmael. During this period, Abraham was 86 years old. At 99 years, he met God another time. This time God made the covenant (a special promise) that Abraham would be the father of many nations.
One fateful day, Abraham saw three strangers. Unknown to him, they were angels. Abraham took them to his house, washed their feet, and fed them. This kind act made them bless Sarah that she would have a baby boy in a year’s time. Upon hearing this, she laughed, she thought it was impossible to bear a child at her age.
Sarah did become pregnant and gave birth to Isaac a year after. Isaac was circumcised after eight days.
Years later, God tested Abraham. He told him to take his son, Isaac, to Mount Moriah and offer him as a sacrifice on one of the mountains as a test. Abraham did as he was told, this made God happy with him and replaced Isaac with a ram.
Abraham had great faith in God. He was very obedient, right from the time God told him to leave his country to when he was asked to sacrifice his favorite son. He almost never doubted God and is regarded as the father of faith and father of many nations. Many great men were his descendants (future family), like Isaac, Jacob, David and Jesus Christ.
