Abraham's Life Story
Swipe to read
Abraham is a prominent figure in the bible, originally known as 'Abram'. Abram's name was changed to Abraham (meaning father of many nations). Till this day, Abraham is regarded as, 'the father of faith' because he had faith in God and obeyed Him, even when it was not convenient for him.
Abraham's father, Terah, was a descendant of Shem, one of the sons of Noah. Terah had two other sons–Nahor and Haran, the father of Lot. Although Abraham married Sarah, she was barren and could not bear children. Terah and his family later left for Canaan, but stopped in Harran and settled there, where Terah eventually died.
God told Abraham to leave his country and his family house for a land He would show him; God promised to bless him and make him father of many nations. Abraham obeyed and trusted God. He took his wife, his nephew (Lot) and all their belongings, and set for Canaan.
They passed through Egypt, and settled in a place between Bethel and Ai, where Abraham built an altar and prayed to God. He had plenty cattle. Eventually, Abraham's and Lot's herdsmen started fighting. For peace to reign, Abraham suggested they separate. Lot chose the side of Jordan that had healthy grass and water, while Abraham chose Canaan.
When she could not bear children, Sarah gave her maid Hagar to Abraham as a wife. Hagar conceived and gave birth to Ishmael. Abraham was 86 years old during this period. At 99 years, he had another encounter with God. God made the covenant, that Abraham would be the father of many nations.
One fateful day, Abraham saw three strangers. Unknown to him, they were angels. Abraham took them to his house, washed their feet, and fed them. This gesture made them bless Sarah that she would have a baby boy in a year's time. Upon hearing this, she laughed, she thought it was impossible to bear a child at her age.
Sarah did conceive and gave birth to Isaac a year after. Isaac was circumcised after eight days.
Years later, God tested Abraham. He told him to take his son, Isaac to the Moriah and offer him as a sacrifice on one of the mountains as a test. Abraham did as he was told, this made God happy with him and replaced Isaac with a ram.
Abraham had great faith in God. He was very obedient, right from the time God told him leave his country to when he was asked to sacrifice his favorite son. He almost never doubted God and is regarded as the father of faith and father of many nations. Many great men were his descendants, like Isaac, Jacob, David and Jesus Christ.

Important Events
God's Call and Covenant with Abraham
God called Abraham in Haran, commanding him to leave his country and his family house and go to a land he would show him. God promised to make Abraham a great nation and a blessing.
At 90 years, God made a covenant with Abraham that He would multiply him exceedingly. According to Genesis 7:4, God made a covenant with Abraham to make him a father of many nations. His name was then changed from 'Abram' to 'Abraham'. God also made a covenant with Abraham's descendants, and promised to give them the promised land, Canaan (the land flowing with honey and milk).
Isaac's birth was part of the fulfillment of God's promise to Abraham. Isaac gave birth to Jacob (also known as Israel), and Israel a big nation came through Jacob.
The Covenant of Circumcision
God made a covenant with Abraham and his descendants, that every male child was to be circumcised. God also made it clear that every male child throughout Abraham's generation, whether born in his house or slaves brought from foreigners was to be circumcised once they were eight days old. For it was an everlasting covenant with Him. Every male who was uncircumcised had broken God's covenant, and they were not His people.
Abraham being an obedient man, did as Gold told him. He took Ishmael, and other males in his household, including slaves that were bought, and they were circumcised that same day, just as God told him. According to the scripture, Abraham was 90 years old while his son Ishmael was 13 years old.
The Birth of Isaac
Sarah had lost all hope of bearing a child, she had even passed child-bearing age. Abraham had hosted three strangers in his house; he gave them food and fetched water to wash their feet. Unknown to Abraham, they were the Lord's angels. They asked for his wife and the angel of God told her she would take in and give birth to a boy in a year time. She laughed when she heard this, she believed it was humanly impossible at her age. The angel said, 'is anything too hard for the Lord? I will return to you at the appointed time next year, and Sarah will have a son.'
The prophesy came to pass, Sarah became pregnant, and she gave birth to a boy and named him Isaac. 'Sarah said, God has brought me laughter, and everyone who hears about this will laugh with me.' Sarah was 90 years old while Abraham was 100 years old.
The Sacrifice of Isaac
God wanted to test Abraham. He called him and told him to take Isaac, his son whom he loved the most, then go to the land of Moriah and offer him as burnt offering on a mountain that He would show him. As hard as that instruction was, Abraham did not disobey God. He took his son, and two of his servants and set for a mountain in Moriah. On getting there, Abraham told his servant to wait with the donkey while himself and Isaac went over one of the mountains and worshipped God. Abraham and Isaac set for the mountain bearing the woods, flit and knife for the burnt offering. Isaac asked his father for the lamb for the sacrifice and Abraham replied him saying, 'God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.' When they got to a place God had shown them, Abraham built an altar, then tied Isaac up and laid him on the woods. As he was about to slay his son, an angel of God stopped him, saying Abraham feared God by not hesitating to sacrifice his favorite son to Him. God provided a ram in place of Isaac and Abraham named that place, 'The Lord Will Provide'. God blessed Abraham and his descendants, saying they would multiply like sands of sea.
