Adam

In the beginning, with words of His mouth, God created heaven and the earth. The earth was empty and formless, then God created light. After this, God created the sky on the second day. Day and night were next, followed by the creation of sea creatures and birds in the sky. The land animals of every kind were created afterward.

On the sixth day of the creation, God decided to create man in His own image. This is quite different from His other creations. God did not just speak and make man. Instead, he molded him from dust and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and man became a living soul. Adam was the first man created by God. God blessed Adam and gave him rule over all other creatures.

God put Adam in a garden eastward in Eden. To make life comfortable for Adam, he made different beautiful trees and food to grow in the garden. Right in the middle of the garden were the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. A river ran through Eden and split into four rivers: Pishon, Gihon, Tigris and Euphrates. God told Adam he could eat from all trees but the tree of good and evil because he would die if he did.

God did not want Adam to be lonely, so He decided to create a helper and partner for him. The Lord made Adam fall in a deep sleep, He removed a rib from Adam to create Eve, and he called her woman, meaning she was taken out of a man. They were both naked and not ashamed, and Adam named all the other creatures.

It happened that the serpent, which was cleverer than any wild animal God created, approached Eve and asked her if God had said they should not eat any tree in the garden. She replied by telling the serpent that God had instructed them not to eat from the tree of good and evil. However, the serpent convinced Eve that if she ate from the tree, her eyes would open, and she would be just like God. Eve saw that the tree looked good, she wanted to have its fruit so she would become wise. She ate the fruit, gave it to her husband and their eyes were opened. They discovered they were naked, so they sewed fig leaves to cover themselves.

When God came to visit them as usual, they hid from him because they were ashamed of themselves. God was so angry that He cursed Adam, Eve and the serpent. He also banished them from the garden.

God placed cherubim at the east of the garden of Eden, and a spinning flaming sword at the center of the garden.

Eve bore Cain, and she said, “With the help of the Lord I have brought forth a man.” Again she became pregnant and gave birth to Abel. Abel was a herdsman while his brother Cain was a farmer.

It happened that Cain and Abel brought God offerings. Abel brought the firstborn of his animals and the fattest, while Cain brought his farm produce. God only accepted Abel’s offering, making Cain angry and depressed. Though God had warned him against sin that was waiting to attack him, Cain killed his brother Abel in the field. He went as far as to pretend he did not know where Abel was, when God asked him. Because of what he did, God cursed Cain, so he became a fugitive and a wanderer. Cain left God’s presence and lived in a city called Nod.
