According to the creation story from the scripture, God created man in His own image. Adam, the first man, was created by God on the sixth day of the creation. He dwelled in the garden of Eden with his wife, until they disobeyed God and were expelled from the beautiful garden.

To make him very comfortable, God gave Adam dominion over all other creations. When Adam needed a helper, God created Eve (the first woman) by taking a rib from Adam, after causing him to fall in a deep sleep. Eve was Adam's wife and companion. This shows how much God loved and cherished Adam.

God had instructed them to eat the fruit of all trees but of the tree in the middle of the garden. The devil came in the form of the serpent and tricked Eve into eating the forbidden fruit. Unfortunately, she also gave some to her husband. Consequently, their eyes were opened, and they knew they were naked.

They were so ashamed of what they had done, that they went into hiding when God came visiting them in the Garden. Adam told God they were afraid because they were naked. God immediately asked if they had eaten from the forbidden tree, then Adam shifted the blame to Eve, while she blamed the serpent.

Their actions infuriated God. He cursed the serpent and put enmity between the woman and the serpent, as well as their descendant. He also said to Eve that she would experience pains to bear children, and her husband would be her lord. Adam on the other hand, would forever eat from the sweat of his hands and die.

Adam and Eve were driven out of the Garden of Eden, to till the ground to produce their own food. Then God placed cherubims at the east of the Garden, and a revolving flaming sword to guard the tree of life.

Despite the love God showed them, Adam and Eve betrayed God, they disobeyed his commandment, causing them to lose everything they had. The sin Adam did, made him immediately come short of God's glory. For this reason, Jesus came into the world and laid down His life as atonement for every believer's sins.

Important Events

In the beginning, with words of His mouth, God created heaven and the earth. The earth was without form and void, then God created light. After this, God created firmament on the second day. Day and night was next, followed by the creation of water creatures and birds of the sky. The land animals of every kind were created afterward.

On the sixth day of the creation, God decided to create man in His own image. This is quite different from His other creations. God did not just command man to form. Instead, he molded him from dust and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and man became a living soul. Adam was the first man created by God. God blessed Adam and gave him dominion over all other creatures.

Genesis 1:1-3, 26-30; 2:7

God put Adam in a garden eastward in Eden. To make life comfortable for Adam, he made different beautiful trees and food to grow in the garden. Right in the middle of the garden were the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. A river ran through Eden and divided into four namely: Pishon, Gihon, Tigris and Euphrates. God told Adam he could eat from all trees but the tree of good and evil because he would die if he did.

God did not want Adam to be lonely, so He decided to create a helper and companion for him. The Lord made Adam fall in a deep sleep, He removed a rib from Adam to create Eve, and he called her woman, meaning she was taken out of a man. They were both naked and not ashamed, and Adam named all the other creatures.

Genesis 2:8-25

It happened that the serpent, which was cleverer than any wild animal God created, approached Eve and asked her if God had said they should not eat any tree in the garden. She replied by telling the serpent that God had instructed them not to eat from the tree of good and evil. However, the serpent convinced Eve that if she ate from the tree, her eyes would open, and she would be just like God. Eve saw that the tree looked good, she wanted to have its fruit so she would become wise. She ate the fruit, gave it to her husband and their eyes were opened. They discovered they were naked, and to cover their nakedness, they sew fig leaves and made themselves aprons.

When God came to visit them as usual, they hid from him because they were ashamed of themselves. God was so angry that He cursed Adam, Eve and the serpent. He also banished them from the garden.

Genesis 1-3

God placed cherubims at the east of the garden of Eden, and a revolving flaming sword at the center of the garden.

Eve bore Cain, and she said, “With the help of the Lord I have brought forth a man.” Again she conceived and gave birth to Abel. Abel was a herdsman while his brother Cain was a farmer.

It came to pass that Cain and Abel brought God offerings. Abel brought the firstborn of his animals and the fattest, while Cain brought his farm produce. God only accepted Abel's offering, making Cain angry and depressed. Though God had warned him against sin that was waiting to attack him, Cain killed his brother Abel in the field. He went as far as denying Abel's whereabouts, when God asked him. Because of what he did, God cursed Cain, so he became a fugitive and a wanderer. Cain left God's presence and lived in a city called Nod.

Fun Facts

Adam the First Man

God created Adam on the sixth day of the creation. Unlike the other creatures, he was created in God's image and likeness.

Adam was created from the soil. He was made a living being when he breathed the breath of life into his nostrils.

Adam the First Gardener

God put Adam in the beautiful Garden of Eden, giving him dominion over all the other creations, like the animals and plants.

Adam was tasked with growing plants and protecting the Garden of Eden; he made sure everything in the Garden worked as it should.

Adam's Wife Was Created with His Ribs

While in the Garden of Eden, God noticed Adam was all by himself, and that he had no one to help him. So, God decided to create Eve (the first woman), using Adam's ribs while he was fast asleep.

Initially Not Ashamed of Their Nakedness

Adam and his wife Eve lived in harmony in the Garden of Eden. To begin with, they were naked and not ashamed.

Unfortunately, they became ashamed of their nakedness after they fell out with God by disobeying God's commandment.

Adam Had Many Children

First, Adam and his wife had Cain and Abel. But when Adam was 130 years, he had Seth, who was in his own likeness.

Throughout Adam's life he also had several other children both male and female.

Adam's Death

Adam did live long; he lived to be 930 years old. His death was a result of God's curse on Adam and his descendants, which was a repercussion of Adam's disobedience.
